That’s it. Right there.
That’s it. Right there.
This release is a return to the core members, with no add-ons. No guests. No
strings. No percussion. Just the trio.
This gives Nigel, Ross and Joel all the space and time they need to stretch out.
Most of the pieces are dedicated to great musicians who have gone before - for instance, ‘Hey Shirley’ is for Shirley Scott, ‘Kid Gloves’ for Pat Martino, ‘Sweet’ (a contrafact on ‘Sugar’) for Stanley Turrentine, etc.
This band is all about respecting the heritage whilst simultaneously forging its own path. Ross is perhaps one of the most accomplished UK jazz musicians of all time and the young Joel Barford is creating shock waves through the scene as he continues his meteoric rise to stardom.
It was recorded over two days at MasterLink studio in Surrey. This is a band with no shortage of live dates so when it came to it, seven of the nine tracks went down on day one, and the session only stopped because Ross had a gig to go to! It’s a snapshot of perhaps the most prolific UK touring jazz group of the 21st-century.
The title comes from a comment Joel made to Nigel after a gig. It’s a kind of reference to the ‘source’. The root of it all. The end goal of all that pursuance.
This from Peter Bernstein:
"This is a beautiful and swinging record by a trio that truly plays together as one. They are tight and loose in all the right ways to keep the music flowing and spontaneous. You can really hear the trust and empathy between these great players, making it a perfect example of unity and also beautiful and strong individual statements. Nigel Price, Ross Stanley, and Joel Barford have a very special thing going with this trio! Great songs, great interplay, and great solos from everyone! I look forward to hearing this group for years to come!"
