Canadian jazz guitar legend Lorne Lofksy teamed up with Enlish kindred spirit Nigel Price as they toured the UK in 25. Luckily the tape was rolling when they played at The Globe in Newcastle on November 16th, 2025.

Having long been admiring Lorne Lofsky from afar (Lorne is in Toronto and Nigel in London), Nigel plucked up the courage to ask him if he had a chart for the track ‘Morning Star’ which he recorded on his album with the legendary guitarist Ed Bickert ‘The Quartet of Lorne Lofsky and Ed Bickert’ back in ‘85.
Lorne sent over Ed’s original handwritten chart, which he called one of the ‘Ed Sea Scrolls’. Some things are more valuable than gold…
Nigel then invited Canadian Lorne to tour the UK in 2023, and their musical relationship has since flourished.
This live album was recorded during their second tour, following a week in Scotland at the tail end of 2025.
Nigel says:
“The band were heading south via the Scottish Borders via Eckford on the Saturday night, The Queen’s Hall in Hexham on the Sunday afternoon and then a mad dash across to The Globe in Newcastle.
It was a gruelling schedule, and possibly too much, but in a way it helped the recording because we were all so tired that we all just had to rely on instinct. There wasn’t any room for nerves or any other kind of intrusive thoughts than can so often affect a performance. It was kind of dreamy…
The crowd were excitable and very much up for the gig, as they always are in this great little venue, and any wisp of fatigue soon disappeared!
It was a special evening and we’re all really pleased that this band were caught in full flight.”
Lorne recorded three of these compositions (Bittersweet, Estaté and Morning Star) with his mentor, Ed Bickert, and regularly used to play the finisher ‘Sushi’ when he was touring with Oscar Peterson.
The rest were just called on the night.
